Scan scrubbers

Scan scrubbers let you automatically redact or replace sensitive information in your emails before Skwad processes them. This is useful when your bank alerts contain personal data you don't want stored, like full account numbers, email addresses, or other identifiable information.

How it works

When an email arrives at your scan address, Skwad applies your scrubber rules before processing:

  1. Email arrives at your scan address
  2. Scrubbers run - each rule replaces matching text in both HTML and plain text versions of the email
  3. Processed email is stored and parsed for transactions

Scrubbers use simple text replacement. For each rule, Skwad finds every occurrence of your "Replace this" text and replaces it with your "With this" text.

Setting up scrubbers

Scrubbers are configured in your Skwad Settings under the Scan scrubbers section.

Captain access required

Only team captains can view and modify scan scrubbers. If you don't see this section, ask your Skwad captain for access.

Creating a scrubber rule

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Scroll to the Scan scrubbers section
  3. Enter the text you want to replace in the first field
  4. Enter the replacement text in the second field (leave empty to remove the text entirely)
  5. Click Save

A new empty row appears automatically when you start typing, so you can add multiple rules.

Example rules

Replace thisWith thisUse case
[email protected][email]Redact email addresses
123**786*****1234Correct last 4 numbers
123 Main Street[address]Redact addresses
[Confidential]:Remove specific phrases

Common use cases

Redacting personal information

Some banks include your full name, address, or other personal details in every alert. Use scrubbers to replace these with generic placeholders:

Replace: John A. Smith
With: [account holder]

Correcting or adding account last fours

Skwads needs last 4s to link your transactions to the correct account.

Replace: Account #*2124**098256***
With: Account #1234
Replace: Spend Account
With: Spend Account #1234

FAQ

Will scrubbers affect transaction parsing?

Be careful not to scrub text that Skwad needs to parse transactions. Avoid replacing amounts, merchant names, or dates unless you have a specific reason. For example, scrubbing "$50.00" to "[amount]" would prevent Skwad from extracting the transaction amount.

Can I use wildcards or patterns?

No, scrubbers use exact text matching only. Each rule replaces a specific string with another string. For pattern-based needs, consider adjusting your bank's alert format or contacting support.

How do I delete a scrubber rule?

Click the X button next to the rule you want to remove, then click Save to apply the change.

Do scrubbers apply to Gmail integration?

Yes! Scrubbers apply to all email sources, including the Gmail integration, email forwarding, and any other method you use to send emails to your scan address.
