Account types
Every account in Skwad has a type that describes what it is — checking, credit card, Roth IRA, HELOC, and so on. The type controls how the account is grouped, how its balance is signed, and where it shows up in your net worth.
Choosing a type
When you create or edit an account, pick its type from the searchable, grouped selector. Start typing to filter (e.g. "roth", "heloc", "tfsa") or browse by group. The same picker is available on web and mobile.
Connected accounts from Plaid and SimpleFin are mapped to the closest granular type automatically when they sync, so most accounts arrive with the right type already set. You can always change it.
Account groups
Granular types roll up into six top-level groups. The first three are liabilities; the rest are assets.
| Group | Examples of types in this group |
|---|---|
| Cash | Checking, Savings, Money market, CD / GIC, HSA, Prepaid, Cash management |
| Credit cards | Credit card, Charge card, Line of credit |
| Loans | Loan, Mortgage, HELOC, Auto loan, Student loan, Personal loan, Business loan |
| Investments | Brokerage, Mutual fund, Stock plan, Crypto, Trust, UGMA / UTMA, 529, ESA |
| Retirement | Roth IRA, Traditional IRA, 401(k), 403(b), 457(b), TSP, Pension, and more |
| Other assets | Real estate, Vehicle, and other assets you track manually |
The group determines whether a balance counts as an asset or a liability. If an account is showing the wrong sign, setting the correct type usually fixes it — loan, mortgage, and credit balances belong in a liability group.
Region-aware labels
Labels adapt to your Skwad's region. Canadian Skwads see the Registered group instead of Retirement, so accounts like TFSA, RRSP, RRIF, LIRA, FHSA, RESP, and RDSP read naturally. US Skwads see Retirement with IRA, 401(k), 403(b), TSP, and similar.
Retirement in net worth
Retirement and registered accounts get their own line in your net worth breakdown, separate from taxable investments. This keeps long-term, tax-advantaged savings from being lumped in with money you can spend today, giving you a clearer picture of what's truly liquid.
FAQ
My connected account has the wrong type — can I change it?
Yes. Edit the account and pick the correct type from the selector. Your change sticks even as the account keeps syncing.
Why does my balance have the wrong +/- sign?
The sign follows the account's group. Assign a liability type (loan, mortgage, credit card, line of credit) to accounts you owe on, and the balance will show correctly.
What if my exact account type isn't listed?
Pick the closest match, or a coarse type like Investment or Other asset. The group is what drives net worth and balance sign, so any type within the right group behaves correctly.
